IL Line Tested: 2009 BMW 750Li vs. 2009 Mercedes-Benz S550

Interior Mark tests hundreds of vehicles a year, but not every conveyance gets a filled write-up. The numbers quiet relate a narrative, although, so we're operation a characteristic on Straightline called IL Line Tested. It's a rapid rundown of all the facts we calm at the line, along with comments manage from the trial drivers. Enjoy.
These are the large guns from BMW and Mercedes-Benz. Admirably, not the biggest guns, but with prices close by or overhead the $100,000 scope, they're large sufficient. The BMW 750Li is all-new for 2009 and looking superior than at all. It's 400-horsepower twin-turbo V8 makes it the closest item to a Motorsport 7 Series we possess at all seen. The Mercedes-Benz S550 is getting a facelift next year, but the contemporary representation has held up admirably. And with a 382-horsepower V8 of its own, it doesn't present up much to the novel BMW .
Single look at the line numbers and you'll be amazed what these two-and-a-quarter ton sedans can do. From 13-second quarter-mile sprints to 110-foot stops from 60mph, these two sedans are ideal examples of what can be consummate when currency is no thing. Filled details after the jump.

Acceleration Comments: I tried so numerous combinations Recreation, Recreation w/Dynamic Grip, Recreation w/DSC away, etc.) that I can't state with fact which single was quickest. I believe Recreation +, DSC away, handbook move (but quiet auto upshift) was the victor. Zero wheelspin was positively the superlative and geez is this item a zoom. Move were quick, bordering on rough and the power felt unrestricted.
Braking Comments: At a deprivation to interpret different stopping distances Maybe a jump in the pavement), but the brakes at all times felt powerfull and grow dim liberated. Large original nip, then a superfast ABS round with zero play. More plunge than expected, smooth of in the Recreation chassis mounting.
Handling Comments: Kindly understeer at the limit with DSC away that was diminished greatly with DSC on – which proved to be the quicker route about the skidpad. Steering gets much heavier as rapidity increases. (Slalom) Amazingly buttery steering touch, fine rotate in, but there's no disbelieve this is a extensive wheelbase motor vehicle. Fine weigh, but smooth of in recreation chassis way there's more rotate than I expected and understeer at the limit. Also noticed that the place belts cozy up when you start tossing this motor vehicle about.

Acceleration Comments: Responds admirably to curb torque, but not wheelspin. Soft linear power distribution with combative use up note. Shifts are buttery soft, but not extremely rapid.
Braking Comments: Mad potent brakes that don't grow dim a morsel. Extremely small plunge, but pedal is at all times a small yielding. Sash cinches closely when ABS engages.
Handling Comments: (Skidpad) In both skidpad and slalom tests, I couldn't uncover any distinction between ESP on and ESP away. Also the Strenuous Corpse Command is extremely odd, but works astonishing admirably – hold all four tires solidly planted. Delivers zero corpse rotate which makes it simple to hold on mark with sole lesser corrections. (Slalom) Because of the slalom, ABS leans the motor vehicle into the rotate like a skier! Extremely odd. In the finish, ABS and ESP made every sprint smoothly repeatable. Identical rapidity with ESP on or off.
